Switch to a green and ethical bank
So, you care about the environment and are doing what you can to make a difference, right? But did you know many banks support fossil fuel companies through lending, investment, and services? Your money could be unknowingly financing oil and gas exploration and production, whilst you’re working hard to do the opposite.
100 fossil fuel companies account for over half of the global emissions since the Industrial Revolution. The harder it is for them to find finance, the less exploration and exploitation they can do. Moving our money to more ethical investments and diverting it away from industries that are harming the environment is a huge achievement, with long term impact both for people and planet (creating green jobs, supporting small businesses, etc). The best part? It’s a one-off action and can be achieved in minutes! Here’s how:
- Search online to check if your bank is currently funding fossil fuel companies, and which banks you could switch to who are making more ethical choices by investing money into green and socially positive schemes. Make the switch!
- Find out where your pension is with and where they invest your money. Often, this can be done online or by calling. If you're signed up to the government pension scheme Nest it's an easy switch to their ethical fund which you can do yourself online here. Otherwise, speak to your employer or pension providers about the options they offer. If they aren’t, ask your pension provider to go green.
