Tune in Read our blog Join 'Leeds By Example' collaboration Transforming recycling on the go Since October 2018, we've been developing 'Leeds By Example', a campaign bringing together a ground-breaking coalition of local and national organisations to improve recycling of food and drink packaging currently disposed of ‘on the go’. In the first six months, the campaign almost doubled recycling on the go in Leeds City Centre from 17-32% by introducing 124 eye-catching new recycling points. The campaign is extending until the end of September to build on what’s been learnt and the same approach is being taken to Swansea and Edinburgh in autumn 2019. The long-term ambition is to find a new method for effective recycling on the go, to help ten more UK towns and cities roll this out in 2020. What's involved All organisations based in Leeds city centre are encouraged to take part. You will receive: Free communication materials to help increase recycling rates by using a consistent, simple recycling message across the city. Discounted recycling bins and collection service. Participation will be subsidised by the #LeedsByExample collaboration of funders. tell me more about the collaboration The issue with ‘on the go’ recycling We are increasingly eating and drinking on the move, resulting in ever more packaging such as drinks bottles, cans and plastic food packaging. This industry is predicted to grow and yet only 42% of local authorities have on-street recycling facilities. Studies show that the public wants to recycle but are confused about what can be recycled. A new, cost-effective approach is needed. The project in Leeds to date has trialled a range of different methods including new technology, bold recycling facilities and engaging communications. Leeds By Example replicates the collaborative approach adopted in the Square Mile Challenge which recycled over 5 million coffee cups in 12 months from the heart of London. Hubbub has also launched The Cup Fund to kickstart coffee cup recycling in other towns and cities across the UK. #LeedsByExample is funded by Starbucks, Ecosurety, Asda, Bunzl, Caffè Nero, Coca-Cola GB, Costa Coffee, Danone, Highland Spring Group, Innocent Group, Lucozade Ribena Suntory, Marks & Spencer, McDonald’s, Nestlé, Pret a Manger and Shell. Affiliate partners are: Cromwell Polythene and WRAP. Local partners are: Forge Recycling, HW Martin, Leeds City Council and Zero Waste Leeds.
