How can households use technology to reduce their carbon emissions? The Smarter Living Challenge launched by BT and Hubbub aims to answer this question as part of BT's wider commitment to a greener, sustainable future. 

This pioneering pilot campaign will initially work with 60 diverse households across the country over the next three months, looking closely at attitudes, perceptions and behaviours around home energy useIt will investigate how digital technology can help to make people’s lives easier and save them money in the process.

The Smarter Living Challenge will provide much-needed evidence in the UK’s drive towards reducing carbon emissions. New consumer research from Hubbub reveals that in a survey of 3,000 adults,  63% of people don’t use any technology to run their homes but almost a quarter would consider doing so if it reduced their impact on the environment. 

The Smarter Living Challenge will explore some of the barriers that exist and how these can be overcome. The polling suggests that cost and complexity could be two areas that need addressing with 43% of people believing that leading a greener lifestyle is expensive and 14% saying that they find technology too complicated and confusing to install and run.   

There is clearly a desire amongst households to act with 61% of people polled saying they are very concerned about the impact of climate change on the planet and 41% saying they would be willing to use technology as a way to reduce bills.  The polling also indicated that there could be some fairly quick and easy ways to help people save money and cut emissions with one in ten confirming they have no idea how much they spend on energy bills. 

The challenge will introduce smart homedevices,apps and tips to a diverse range of households from across the UK, ranging from the tech-savvy to the technophobe. This will include smart thermostats and radiator valves; smart lightingand plugs; apps to manage energy, food and water use and websites to compare usage and learn how to save money on bills. 

The group will come together as a digital community to share their exeriences and help inspire each other to try something new.Experiences and case studies from the project will be used as evidence and inspirationto showhowtechnology can make running a home easier,cheaper and reduce household carbon emissions. 

The results from the first phase of the challenge will be released in the spring of 2021. The ambition is to use the learnings and case studies generated by the Smarter Living Challenge as the bedrock for a campaign seeking to become the UK’s largest movement of households committeto making positive and tangible changes at home. 

We’ve had practise 

Hubbub recently ran a similar campaign, bringing together a digital community of diverse households, this time to focus on food waste. The pilot in partnership with Tesco saw an average reduction in food waste of 76%. Read more about the results below.
