To kick off the New Year Hubbub and North London Waste Authority mixed up an eclectic cocktail of clothes swapping and refashion events in north London. The workshops captured people’s imagination, showing them how to revitalise their wardrobe through practical sewing skills and a splash of imagination. Here’s how we concocted the events!

Step 1: Fill to the brim with inspiring ways to make clothes last longer

From natural dyeing to creating bobble hats from old jumpers; the variety of workshops proved that there are endless creative ways to transform a tired looking garment. Workshop hosts Tea & Crafting showed us that even rags can be made into beautiful pictures.

Step 2: Add talented workshop leaders into the mix

Our workshop hosts are experts in their craft. Resurrection Boutique guided people through restyling their clothes and designers Everything in Colour showed people how to magically repair their favourite jeans. Katherine May taught us the origins of indigo dying, whilst Celia Pym beautifully communicated stories of mending & darning from around the world.

Step 3: Stir in some community spirit

Our locally-advertised events linked sewing businesses and designers to north London communities. Enthusiasm built up over the two weekends, particularly with our popular clothes swaps run by swish experts Rags Revival. People passing by rushed home to pick up an item to swap and we soon got to know our ‘regulars’.

Step 4: Mix together different generations

We got children and adults making bobble hats with textile charity TRAID and kids making bags out of old denim with Little Hands Design. Our workshops welcomed people of all ages and showed that skills can easily be shared across generations, and should be!

Step 5: Serve with a large dollop of fun

Here at Hubbub it goes without saying that whatever event we put on, we’re going to have fun doing it. People taking part in the workshops went home with new skills and more importantly a smile on their faces.

Missed out? Not to worry. Join us for yet another exciting #Refashion event on Sunday 3rd April from 11am-12.30pm at the Camden Arts Centre. Tea & Crafting will be back, this time showing you how to make a gorgeous necklace out of a T-shirt. Get your tickets here
