What is your fondest childhood memory? Whether it’s the sweet recollection of an ice cream lolly on a hot summer day, or the mouth-watering anticipation of mum’s Christmas turkey, I’ll bet you an apple pie that it’s somehow related to food.

Many of mine are from cooking in my nan’s kitchen, where me and my siblings spent most Sundays, preparing and enjoying a menu that never changed: tomato soup made from scratch, served with macaroni and sausage bites.

Three years my senior, my sister would leave the safer tasks of stirring and measuring to me, while she had a go at chopping and peeling – under our nan’s watchful supervision. She would patiently instruct us, seemingly ignoring the mess we made as we climbed the kitchen counter like monkeys. Afterwards, we would enjoy the vegetables of our labour, slightly sweetened by the fact that we had made it “all by ourselves”. 
After all these years I can still taste the velvety, creamy texture of her signature dish, a result of carefully selected ingredients, hours and hours of slow cooking, and a good dollop of love.

My nan’s secret ingredient - time – can be difficult to come by these days, with our kids’ cooking skills suffering as a consequence. Recent polling conducted by Censuswide for Hubbub shows that 6 in 10 parents never cook a homemade meal from scratch with their kids.

Mastering the A-B-C of cooking is an important part of enjoying a healthy diet, saving money and avoiding food waste. Just as thyme offers a solution to a flavourless pasta sauce, time can be the remedy for the growing skills gap in the younger generation.
