Hubbub today announced the twelve winners who have secured over investment to boost coffee cup recycling facilities across the UK. The funding was provided from the 5p charge on disposable coffee cups that has been voluntarily introduced by Starbucks and is donated to Hubbub to reduce plastic pollution.

The announcement comes hot on the heels of the launch of Swansea #InTheLoop, a significant collaborative campaign that will boost high street recycling in the city. The campaign builds on the experience of #LeedsByExample and is the next step in Hubbub’s ambition to make it easier for people to recycle on high streets across the UK.

The investment in coffee cup recycling facilities will make it possible to recycle an extra 35 million cups per annum. The winning projects cover the heart of London, major cities, shopping centres, universities and motorway service stations. Read more about them here. They were selected by an independent expert grant panel including representatives from LARAC and the CIWM.

The fund was developed in close collaboration with the recycling industry ensuring that all the collected cups will be recycled within the UK into a variety of new products including high quality stationary and cardboard boxes.

The projects will benefit from the experience and independent evaluation that Hubbub has gathered through initiatives such as the #SquareMileChallenge and #LeedsByExample. This knowledge will enhance the quality of the campaigns which will generate further data that will be used to inform new initiatives.

The announcement of the new investment forms part of a long-term strategy that Hubbub has developed thanks to the donation provided through the Starbucks cup charge. This strategy aims to:

Tackle litter

Hubbub has used the funding to build two new boats made from 99% recycled plastic. These boats are being used to run plastic fishing trips that remove litter from UK waterways. The second of these boats the Poly Roger has recently been donated to the Wildlife Trust for Birmingham and the Black Country allowing the charity to run plastic trips in their locality.

Boost recycling

The Cup Fund investment, the UK’s largest grant fund of it’s kind, will boost coffee cup recycling in the UK whilst the expansion of #InTheLoop will boost high street recycling facilities in three major cities.

Promote cup reuse

Our ambition it to increase the uptake of reusable cups to 10% of hot drinks sold. We started on this journey with a trial campaign at Gatwick Airport. This was the first step in what will become a significant and ambitious area of activity with more announcements to be made in the coming months.

Create a Circular Economy

We want to boost the circular economy within the UK demonstrating that we have the capacity and ingenuity to transform waste into a range of innovative projects, the recycled plastic boats being one example of this.  Hubbub is also partnering with the GLA to deliver a campaign called #GiveItAGrow which is giving away home growing kits to 10,000 Londoners including information carried on card made from the recycled paper cups.
