5 DIY skin care products you can make out of food Beauty treatments often come with a big price tag, but did you know you could make your own skin care products at home? Your fridge and kitchen cupboards are full of tasty ingredients that can be reinvented into face masks and body scrubs. 70% of waste in the beauty industry comes from packaging and the use of plastic is a big issue. From used coffee grounds to Greek yoghurt, these simple DIY beauty methods are a great alternative to the often heavily packaged and pricey items in the shops. So, raid your kitchen and give yourself a well-deserved treat for a fraction of the cost to your purse and the planet. 1) Coffee Scrub - Make the most of your caffeine fix and relax after the daily grind. Coffee grounds are a great natural exfoliator, and with many of us working from home we might be using more of them than before. Save your coffee grounds from the bin and give them a new life with this simple body scrub. Method: Mix 3 tablespoons of used coffee grounds with 1 tablespoon of coconut or olive oil and 1 tablespoon of sugar to make an exfoliating body scrub. Pop the scrub into a mason jar for a great thrifty gift for friends or family. The scrub can be stored for up to a month in a sealed container. Simply add a cup of ground oats to your bath for a soothing treat. You can also add whole oats to the foot of some tights and tie it round the tap to avoid oats going down the drain. 3) Honey face mask - Treat your bee-utiful self. Honey has antibacterial properties and is an all-round great ingredient for your skin. For this simple face mask mix 2 teaspoons of honey with 2 teaspoon of olive oil and leave on your face for 10 minutes. Fancy some gentle exfoliation? Add half a teaspoon of ground almonds and gently rub your skin as you apply it before washing off after 10 minutes. Top Tip: Homemade face masks don’t have any of the preservatives that shop bought products contain, so once you’ve made your mask use it straight away. 4) Yoghurt and green tea face mask - Bring out your inner tranquili-tea. Greek yoghurt contains lactic acid, which when applied to the skin acts like a gentle exfoliant. For this mask simply mix 1 tablespoon of Greek yoghurt (or coconut yoghurt if you want to go plant based) with the contents of a steeped green tea bag. Apply the mix to your face and wash it off with warm water after 10 minutes. Your skin will thank you. 5) Simple sugar lip scrub - a delicious sweet treat that’s tasty too. This is a super easy method that can be whipped up in less than a minute with a range of ingredients. Simply mix a teaspoon of brown sugar with a teaspoon of honey, golden syrup, coconut oil or shea butter into a paste and rub on your lips for a minute. The scrub can be stored for up to a month in a sealed container. You’ll never buy one from the shop again! Savvy Tips Want to learn more about beauty?
